Feature Project: A Modern Oasis in The Burbs

Modernity happens in unexpected places. Tucked away in an upscale suburb north of Toronto, characterized by an overwhelming faux-Edwardian housing style, is a spectacular backyard with serious modern cred.

Typical of backyards of the area is, well, lawn. This backyard design and renovation, a collaboration between Toronto’s The Walsh Group and Betz Pools, turned the challenging, multi-level lot into an outdoor oasis that would make most resorts envious.

In addition to a poolside Robata 72 Linear Outdoor Fire, the yard includes many other state-of-the-art features: A pool with an integrated waterfall, an infinity-edge hot tub, and color-modulating pool lights. A modern cabana with a sliding, fully opening glass wall that reveals an entertainment center, complete with a projector and retractable movie screen, wet bar, and ipe decking. Also, hidden out of view in the cabana is an outdoor shower. The pool deck, in stamped concrete, features an outdoor kitchen and banquet bar and ample lounging areas with furnishings by Dedon. The fire pit, waterfall, hot tub, cabana, pool, and landscape lighting can all be controlled by the main panel to the edge of the hot tub or using an iPhone app.
