When exposed to repeated wetting and drying cycles, Corten develops a protective, hardened oxidation layer, which also gives it a characteristic \u201crusty\u201d appearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Corten steel requires exposure to rain for its protective layer to develop.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We recommend leaving your fire pit uncovered during the \u201cuse\u201d season. Covering a Corten steel fire pit that has not had time for the outer surface to harden may cause unpleasant but temporary aesthetic issues.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fire pits should only be covered for winterization or during extreme weather events. Otherwise, it is better to leave them uncovered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Corten steel will bleed rust-colored run-off onto adjacent surfaces.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We do not recommend sealing Corten steel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Objects left on Corten steel surfaces may leave marks. However, marks will self-correct given time and further exposure to rain.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If, for any reason, your Corten steel fire pit has developed unsightly marks, it is possible to correct or re-set the surface.
