A Reimagined Coastal Garden in Long Beach

This lovingly renovated Cliff May home was the perfect picture of a modern California ranch house, and to complete it, the homeowners sought a functional outdoor space for unwinding with the family.

Designer Molly Sedlacek from ORCA set out to reimagine the home’s outdoor pool, transforming it into a sunken garden with a Paloform fire pit, a small patch of no-mow grass, and an outdoor kitchen and dining area.

Reimagined Coastal Garden in Long Beach

The design of the fire pit area, anchored by the Caldera fire pit, is what Sedlacek refers to as “integrated hardscaping.” Blocks of solid eucalyptus surround the fire, complementing Caldera’s weathered corten steel finish, and serve as both seating and retaining walls for the plantings behind them.

For added privacy, Sedlacek adorned the space with a variety of plants in silver blues and greens, creating the appeal of a quiet garden with lush greenery. This landscaping palette also complements the warm tones of the clay, wood, and corten steel hardscape in the garden.

A harmony of earthy materials, the Paloform Caldera Fire Pit sits naturally at the heart of this sunken garden, with its rich patina evolving beautifully over time.
