Modern Outdoor Sanctuary in Santa Monica

Nestled near Santa Monica’s Palisades Park, this modern coastal home is a masterpiece in balancing contemporary design with thoughtful details. Originally built with a modernist glass-and-steel structure, architects David Bennett and Kim Lavacot brought life to the space, adding understated character where it matters.

Working with them were interior designers David John Dick and Krista Schrock, who layered tactile materials and soft tones to create a home that feels inviting, serene, and enduring. Extending this calm philosophy to the outdoors, landscape architect Ryan Gutierrez designed a Mediterranean-inspired terrace that complements the home’s tranquil atmosphere.

At the poolside, RH lounge chairs and a sofa surround Paloform’s Fold fire pit table, which adds warmth and light to this gathering space as the sun sets over the Pacific. This elemental feature embodies the project’s core mission, transforming the area into what the homeowner describes as “a spot we spend so much time in.” It demonstrates that modern design can be both elegant and rich in character.
